A Family Valentine’s Day Ritual

One of the most fun parts about being a mom is creating special rituals and traditions for the holidays. For Valentine’s Day, I love the idea of putting together a simple tablescape that can serve as the foundation for your ritual. From there, you can keep it simple and serve whatever you’d normally serve for breakfast or dinner, or you can take it to the next level with one of the 5 ideas I've shared below.

Valentine

A simple yet festive tablescape is all you need to create lasting memories for you and your family.

The Tablescape

I’ve started with our new shibori tablecloth, which I love because it’s one that you’ll want to use year-round, not something with hearts all over it that you may only use once a year.

I found these heart-shaped shells from Etsy, for a whimsical, nature-based touch also offering a nod to the holiday. Again, something I’m far more likely to use throughout the year.

And then I had to include something more true to the holiday, so for that I found these felt hearts from Target, which I like because they are the most inexpensive part of the table and they also serve as a toy for Violet. She loves playing with them, sorting them, carrying them around and delivering them as "Valentines" to us.

You can then decorate with pink and red flowers and taper candles. This is a great way to get the kids involved; have them join you at the florist to pick out flowers, or to pick flowers outside. You can get as creative as you'd like, using candy or other decorations you may have around the house.

Perfect for Year-Round Use

I love decorating for all of the holidays but what I don't love is buying things that can only be used once.

One day, when I live in the house of my dreams with a bedroom-sized linen closet 😏 I can collect and store all of the holiday-specific decorations I want. But for now, and for most of us, I like to find things I love that also work for other times of the year, too.

I've been shocked myself at how versatile this tablecloth is. The lilac color almost acts as a neutral, marrying so well with all of my other napkins and decor.

Ideas for the Ritual

Creating the tablescape and decorating it together could be your family's ritual in itself. You can then enjoy breakfast or dinner together, keeping it simple and serving whatever you would normally serve, or choosing a favorite meal to enjoy each year.

If you’d like to take it a step further, here are a few of my favorite ideas…

5 Ways to Celebrate Valentine’s Day with Your Family:

  • Ice cream sundae bar — Make or buy strawberry ice cream and have an assortment of toppings, including pink and red sprinkles and strawberry syrup
  • Strawberry smoothies for breakfast with heart straws for those looking for a healthier take
  • Heart-shaped pancakes (chocolate chips and sprinkles!)
  • A V-day breakfast board — filled with donuts, strawberries, raspberries, any other favorite baked goods your family loves
  • Heart-shaped pizzas — or, if you rather not cook, ask your local pizzeria to do toppings in the shape of a heart and order in 🙂
